Millets are a group of highly variable small- seeded grasses, widely grown around the world as cerealcrops or grains for fodder and human food. Millets are important crops in the semiarid tropics of Asia and Africa (especially in India, Mali, Nigeria, and Niger), with 9. They have been in cultivation in East Asia for the last 1. Generally, the millets are small- grained, annual, warm- weather cereals belonging to grass family. They are highly tolerant of extreme weather conditions such as drought and are similarly nutritious among major cereals, such as rice and wheat. Millet varieties. Chinese legends attribute the domestication of millet to Shennong, the legendary Emperor of China. Millets also formed important parts of the prehistoric diet in Indian, Chinese Neolithic and Korean Mumun societies. Broomcorn (Panicum miliaceum) and foxtail millet were important crops beginning in the Early Neolithic of China. For example, some of the earliest evidence of millet cultivation in China was found at Cishan (north). Cishan dates for common millet husk phytoliths and biomolecular components have been identified around 8. BC in storage pits along with remains of pit- houses, pottery, and stone tools related to millet cultivation. Evidence for the cultivation of Pearl Millet in Mali dates back to 2. BC. It's cultivation had spread to South India by 1. BC. This has, in part, made millet production popular, particularly in countries surrounding the Sahara Desert in western Africa. Millets, however, do respond to high fertility and moisture. On a per hectare basis, millet grain produced per hectare can be two to four times higher with use of irrigation and soil supplements. Improved breeds of millet improve their disease resistance and can significantly enhance farm yield productivity. There has been cooperation between poor countries to improve millet yields. For example, 'Okashana 1', a variety developed in India from a natural- growing millet variety in Burkina Faso, doubled yields. This breed was selected for trials in Zimbabwe. From there it was taken to Namibia, where it was released in 1. Okashana 1 became the most popular variety in Namibia, the only non- Sahelian country where pearl millet – locally known as mahangu – is the dominant food staple for consumers. The breed has significantly enhanced yields in Mauritania and Benin. In the 1. 97. 0s, all of the millet crops harvested in India were used as a food staple. By the 2. 00. 0s, the annual millet production had increased in India, yet per capita consumption of millet had dropped by between 5. As of 2. 00. 5, most millet produced in India is being used for alternative applications such as livestock fodder and alcohol production. The most productive millet farms in the world were in France, with a nationwide average yield of 3. Various peoples in East Africa brew a drink from millet or sorghum known as ajono, a traditional brew of the Teso. The fermented millet is prepared in a large pot with hot water and people share the drink by sipping it through long straws. Millet is also the base ingredient for the distilled liquor rakshi in Nepal and the indigenous alcoholic drink of the Sherpa, Tamang, Rai and Limbu people, tongba, in eastern Nepal. In Balkan countries, especially Romania and Bulgaria, millet is used to prepare the fermented drink boza. As a food source. This millet confection tradition began when it was presented to Sugawara no Michizane when he stopped in Naniwa during the early Heian period, about 1. Millets are major food sources in arid and semiarid regions of the world, and feature in the traditional cuisine of many others. In western India, sorghum (called jowar, jola, jonnalu, jwaarie, or jondhahlaa in Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and Marathi languages, respectively; mutthaari, kora, or pangapullu in Malayalam; or cholam in Tamil) has been commonly used with millet flour (called jowari in western India) for hundreds of years to make the local staple, hand- rolled (that is, made without a rolling pin) flat bread (rotla in Gujarati, bhakri in Marathi, or roti in other languages). Another cereal grain popularly used in rural areas and by poor people to consume as a staple in the form of roti. Other millets such as ragi (finger millet) in Karnataka, naachanie in Maharashtra, or kezhvaragu in Tamil, . Ragi, as it is popularly known, is dark in color like rye, but rougher in texture. Millet porridge is a traditional food in Russian, German, and Chinese . In Russia, it is eaten sweet (with milk and sugar added at the end of the cooking process) or savoury with meat or vegetable stews. In China, it is eaten without milk or sugar, frequently with beans, sweet potato, and/or various types of squash. In Germany, it is also eaten sweet, boiled in water with apples added during the boiling process and honey added during the cooling process. Per capita consumption of millets as food varies in different parts of the world with consumption being the highest in Western Africa. In the Sahel region, millet is estimated to account for about 3. Burkina Faso, Chad and the Gambia. In Mali and Senegal, millets constitute roughly 4. Niger and arid Namibia it is over 6. Other countries in Africa where millets are a significant food source include Ethiopia, Nigeria and Uganda. Millet is also an important food item for the population living in the drier parts of many other countries, especially in eastern and central Africa, and in the northern coastal countries of western Africa. In developing countries outside Africa, millet has local significance as a food in parts of some countries, such as China, India, Burma and North Korea. Instead of letting the plant reach maturity it can be grazed by stock and is commonly used for sheep and cattle. Millet is a C4 plant which means it has good water efficiency and utilizes high temperature and is therefore a summer crop. A C4 plant uses a different enzyme in photosynthesis from C3 plants and this is why it improves water efficiency. In southern Australia millet is used as a summer quality pasture, utilizing warm temperatures and summer storms. Millet is frost sensitive and is sown after the frost period, once soil temperature has stabilised at 1. It is sown at a shallow depth. Millet grows rapidly and can be grazed 5–7 weeks after sowing, when it is 2. The highest feed value is from the young green leaf and shoots. The plant can quickly come to head, so it must be managed accordingly because as the plant matures the value and palatability of feed reduces. The Japanese millets (Echinochloa esculenta) are considered the best for grazing and in particular Shirohie, a new variety of Japanese millet, is the best suited variety for grazing. This is due to a number of factors: it gives better regrowth and is later to mature compared to other Japanese millets; it is cheap – cost of seed is $2–$3 per kg and sowing rates are around 1. Compared to forage sorghum, which is grown as an alternative grazing forage, animals gain weight faster on millet and it has better hay or silage potential, although it produces less dry matter. Lambs do better on millet compared to sorghum. Prussic acid poisons animals by inhibiting oxygen utilisation by the cells and is transported in the blood around the body — ultimately the animal will die from asphyxia. Farmers can wait until sufficient late spring / summer moisture is present and then make use of it. It is ideally suited to irrigation where livestock finishing is required. Raw millet is 9% water, 7. Comparison with other major staple foods. Raw forms, however, are not edible and cannot be fully digested. These must be prepared and cooked as appropriate for human consumption. In processed and cooked form, the relative nutritional and antinutritional contents of each of these grains is remarkably different from that of raw forms reported in this table. The nutritional value in the cooked form depends on the cooking method. Nutrient profile comparison of millet with other food staples. Synopsis. Two things I can count on at this time of year. When I walk into a mall, I’m going to hear Christmas music blaring from the speakers. When I walk into a family gathering, I’m going hear the 1. Year Old Fat Girl in my head. Yes, there is a Fat Girl in my head. You wouldn’t know it if you saw me. You might even be annoyed that I’m talking about weight issues, but I could show you pictures that would explain it all. Still, when the Fat Girl takes over my mouth, I piss off my friends. I come off as insensitive and self- obsessed. I got the red angry face emoji followed by the punch as the response to an incredibly whiney text where I complained about the place where my thigh meets my butt, you know, the “thutt.” I get it. If I was you listening to me, I’d say the same things, but the problem is, it’s the Fat Girl who will answer and she is loud. She says those typically self- sabotaging things to me, like: “Don’t go sleeveless, you’ve got armpit boobs.”“Change your pants, I can see your camel toe. You’re going to sound arrogant, reveal too much, be too honest, wake up with a vulnerability hangover in the morning, open yourself up to internet trolls and their mean comments, fall into a shame spiral and feel like absolute and complete shit.”I told you she was loud. See, this girl, she’s only fifteen years old, and she doesn’t fully understand what’s going on with her body. She’s always been the skinny kid who could eat anything and not gain anything. But then seemingly overnight, everything starts. Expanding, sidewards and outwards, but not upwards. No, that growing was done. She gets to maintain this 5 foot and a half inch fun- sized stature, but she packs on over thirty pounds in the summer between sophomore and junior year. It happens so quickly, in fact, that she doesn’t even really notice. But then these raised white marks that look like lightning bolts, start to appear on her brown- skinned thighs and hips. Her bra, which, up until now, is only one step up from a trainer, is pinching her back, suffocating these now full, round, overflowing breasts. Then at Thanksgiving dinner, she overhears her mom sounding defensive in a conversation with her aunt, saying: “No, no, no, she’s not fat, she’s just. Her heart beats so loud and so fast, that she just can’t seem to pay attention in class. She’s got insomnia which means she’s up till 4am and can’t get to school before noon. But that’s okay, because that’s still in time to make it to Carmen Hill’s 5th period Junior English class where she gets herself lost in Edgar Allen Poe, from his necromancy with Annabel Lee to the “tintinnabulation that so musically wells from the bells, bells, bells, bells.” Her heart swells when she feasts her eyes on the blue walls in this cocoon of creativity, adorned with famous artwork painted by students’ hands. Da. Vinci, Picasso, Mirot, Van Gogh. And her favorite, Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus.” Venus stands so confidently, and doesn’t look like someone who would be scared of family parties. She’s certainly not afraid to stand barefoot and naked on a shell. Sure, she’s modest enough to use her long hair to cover her lady parts, but five will get you ten, there is no fat hoo- ha underneath. So between Venus’ gentle strength and Edgar’s unapologetic darkness, the 1. Year Old Fat Girl finds the courage to write, poetry and prose, words put together to make shit and gold. Here, it doesn’t matter what’s on the outside, it’s about what comes from the inside. It’s about pen and paper – because that’s how we used to write back then. If only the Fat Girl could hold on to that confidence to get through Christmas Day, then she wouldn’t be hurt when her uncle, a retired surgeon, bellows from across the room, “Ija! Why is your neck so big?” This one stings. This is from the “nice” uncle, the one she always wished was her dad. He beckons her over, wraps his palsy- stricken hand around her neck, holding it tightly for a few awkward seconds. She knows Filipino aunts squeeze boobs, but why is the Filipino uncle squeezing her neck? Finally, he lets go, nods to himself and says, “This child has a thyroid problem.”She doesn’t know what a thyroid is, much less what it means for it to be problematic. Blood work will show that this gland in her neck is hyper- active, producing too much of its hormones, which was the cause of the insomnia, the lack of focus, the rapid heart rate. But the weight gain is a stumper; the opposite of the usual symptom of weight loss. It’s a little like getting the crappy gift at an already crappy White Elephant. Nevertheless, like a forgotten present found behind the tree, days past Christmas, the New Year gifts her with the antidote, in the form of sodium- iodide, delivered by a costumed, portly gentleman, as mysterious as Santa. Except this one is a technician, wearing a white hazmat- suit, complete with spaceman helmet. She feels severely under- dressed in her California winter tank- top, shorts and flip- flops in this cocoon of convalescence, where the only artwork on the walls are red and yellow radiation hazard signs. Spaceman Santa opens a combination safe with care so his gloved hands can remove a heavy silver cylindrical object. He places it in front of her, sticks a straw in the middle, and motions for her to drink. It tastes like a melted wheelchair. She’ll have to give the toilet three flushes every time she pees, and stay away from babies and pregnant women for at least three days, which means she’s off the hook for any further gatherings as the sodium- iodide disintegrates and eliminates her thyroid. The last step is the pharmacy, to receive a bottle of small lavender pills: synthetic thyroid. She’s told she needs to take these pills for the rest of her life. She’ll spend the next thirty years rebelling against being tied to medication. I don’t start to get my body back for another two years, when I learn that if I just stop putting food in my mouth, not only can I drop the numbers on the scale, but I can also stop the 1. Year Old Fat Girl from talking. And when that doesn’t shut her up, Jim Beam in one hand and a can of Coke in the other work just as well as ear plugs. Yet, after three decades of knocking the shit out of my body to try to knock her out of my head, as the season gets festive, her voice becomes ever present. Even after resolving to take my meds, work out regularly and get myself into the healthiest shape I’ve ever been in, when I look in the mirror, it is her I see. It is her voice I try to stop. But, this year, I decided it’s time to do things differently. It’s time to listen to what’s underneath her words and insecurities. It’s time to stop fighting her back. She’s only fighting me because she didn’t have a chance to fight back then. She feels robbed of the opportunity to protect herself, and she’s not going to let it happen again. She doesn’t deserve a shut- down. She deserves my compassion, my support and my love. So this year, I’ll be her sugar plum fairy. I’ll be her Secret Santa. Come Christmas Eve, there will be two presents under the tree just for her. The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe, and Botticelli’s Venus, with a card that says “Merry Christmas, to the 1. How to Make Green Smoothies for Health & Weight Loss. A green smoothie is possibly the best gift nature has to offer in a glass. A green smoothie doesn’t exactly sound appetizing or look as inviting as a strawberry smoothie. ![]() ![]() But green smoothies can go above and beyond your average fruit smoothie. Mostly it’s about getting used to drinking something green. To a certain degree it’s also an acquired taste. But so is alcohol. And you didn’t let it’s bad taste stop you, did you? What’s more, unlike alcohol, green smoothies have some seriously awesome health benefits. If wheatgrass juice is the equivalent of a tequila shot, think of smoothies as cocktails. ![]() ![]()

With the perfect smoothie recipe, which means you get the ratios of vegetables to fruit just right, you’ll barely taste the vegetables in your smoothie at all. Generally the fruit taste dominates the flavor of the drink, while the greens balance out the fruit’s sweetness, adding nice bit of zest. For example, if you’ve added apples and lemons, that’ll be the overriding taste of your green drink (check out how to make a smoothie taste awesome!)If you like trends or just want to know how the other half lives. Most famous faces have cottoned on to the benefits of green smoothies. And there are some pretty all- right- looking and well- known guys who enjoy a green smoothie or juice: Chris Pine, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Duhamel and Ryan Seacrest to name a few. If you’re new to green smoothies, start with more fruit than usual, until you get used to the taste. Choose a sweet fruit that you enjoy. For example, if you’re juicing add a few more apples, if you’re making a smoothie add more pineapple. Once you have acquired the taste – though there really isn’t that much to acquire – you can start to add more vegetables and less fruit. Experiment and fine- tune the mix and ratio of ingredients in the smoothie to your own liking until you’ve found your own particular green smoothie recipe that matches your unique tastes. Maybe you like apples or cucumbers or celery. Only you know what you like, so adjust where needed. To make your green smoothie filling, balanced and more of a meal, add carbs (veggies, fruit), protein (nuts, seeds, yogurt, protein power) and healthy fats (nuts, coconut oil). You can give your smoothie an extra nutritional boost by adding extras such as spirulina, chlorella, probiotics, bee pollen, and maca powder. Don’t just drink your green smoothie, chew it a little too. It aids digestion. The albedo or pith (white part of citrus fruits) is part of the peel and high in Vitamin C and bioflavonoids (an antioxidant). Therefore, try to leave on as a much as possible when peeling citrus fruit. Remove hard seeds or pits from fruit such as cherries, peaches and plums. Smaller seeds from fruit such as watermelon can be left, and they do provide valuable nutrients. Watch the added extras when you make your green smoothie. If you’re looking to make a weight loss smoothie or low calorie smoothie, you want to make it filling and low in calories, without sacrificing taste or nutritional content. That means watching portions. How much nut butter and fruit are you adding? See more on how to make a weight loss smoothie. Green smoothies and green juices are best consumed immediately upon making. However, if you must blend or juice some time ahead of when you’ll be drinking it, store your smoothie or juice in a narrow, airtight glass container and fill it to the rim to minimize oxidation. Add a teaspoon of oil, such as extra virgin coconut oil, fish oil, cod liver oil, coconut oil and evening primrose oil (or try Udo’s Choice Oil Blend a mix of Omega 3, 6 and 9 oils). Many of the nutrients are fat soluble, such as Vitamin K, which means some fat is needed by the body for proper assimilation. A consultation once the evaluation has been completed is imperative. A treatment plan should be generated according to the diagnosis, duration of infertility, and the woman's age. If pregnancy has not been established within a reasonable time, further evaluation and/or an alternative treatment plan should be considered. Treatment of Cervical Factors. Chronic cervicitis may be treated with antibiotics. Reduced secretion of cervical mucus due to destruction of the endocervical glands by previous cervical conization, freezing, or laser vaporization responds poorly to low- dose estrogen therapy. The easiest and most successful treatment is intrauterine insemination (IUI). Cervical insemination has almost been abandoned because of its low success and has been relegated only to cases in which the sperm count is normal, such as in artificial insemination using donor sperm or if the sample has elevated white cells. For intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection procedures, the removal of certain components of the ejaculate (ie, seminal fluid, excess cellular debris, leukocytes, morphologically abnormal sperm) with the retention of the motile fraction of sperm is desirable. For most specimens, the greatest recovery of the motile portion results from separation via centrifugal filtration through a discontinuous density gradient system. However, for certain very poor specimens with low original concentrations of motile sperm, the use of the gradient system results in such a negligible recovery as to render it useless. The recourse for these specimens is to remove the seminal fluid by successive media washes. A small number of specimens have acceptable original concentrations of motile sperm but poor recoveries with the gradient system. These specimens benefit most from layering a washed pellet of sperm with nutrient media and allowing the motile fraction to swim up into the media before being separated. Intrauterine insemination is performed during a natural cycle or after ovulation induction with CC or gonadotropins. ![]() ![]() The procedure is performed 3. Today, it is feasible by using a surrogate mother or gestational carrier. Once patients desire to have children, they proceed with stimulation of the ovaries, oocyte aspiration, and in vitro fertilization, but the embryos are transferred to a gestational carrier (see In Vitro Fertilization). The treatment of uterine malformations depends on the severity of the problem. Fertility is not an issue for some patients affected by DES, and they remain undiagnosed until they have an abnormal Papanicolaou test result. Those who do have fertility problems are treated according to the following guidelines: . Patients with this type of uterus can have a normal term pregnancy. Most problems are related to premature labor and pregnancy loss. Unicornuate uterus is associated with renal abnormalities including absence of a kidney or presence of a pelvic kidney; this occurs in 1. Thus, an intravenous pyelogram must be performed once this diagnosis is made. Whether interventions before conception or early in pregnancy, such as resection of the rudimentary horn and prophylactic cervical cerclage, decidedly improve obstetrical outcomes is uncertain; however, current practice suggests that such interventions may be helpful. Women presenting with a history of this anomaly should be considered high- risk obstetrical patients. A bicornuate uterus can be associated with a history of recurrent miscarriages, and its repair is indicated only if other etiologies for the miscarriage have been excluded (see Surgical intervention below). Arcuate uterus. In general, an arcuate uterus does not cause infertility. Whether it should be corrected in cases of primary infertility is controversial. Septate uterus. The hypothesis that a uterine septum can cause infertility is controversial. Advising surgery in cases of primary infertility is difficult. ![]() ![]() The avascular nature of the septum is theorized to interfere with implantation and maintenance of the embryo. Uterine anomalies can be corrected through operative hysteroscopy under general anesthesia or conscious sedation. Furthermore, laparoscopy assists in the differential diagnosis between a septate and a bicornuate uterus. A bicornuate uterus is characterized by the presence of an indentation at the fundus. The 2 techniques are the Strassman metroplasty and the Jones metroplasty. The Strassman metroplasty consists of performing an incision at the fundus of the uterus between both cornual areas and closing the defect with an anteroposterior suture. The Jones metroplasty consists of resecting the septum using an anteroposterior wedge incision and closing the defect in the same direction (see the images below). The surgery is performed during the early follicular phase. Once the synechiae have been resected, leaving an intrauterine balloon for 7 days is advisable to prevent a recurrence of adhesions. The patient should receive prophylactic antibiotics and uterine relaxants (eg, ibuprofen) during these 7 days to prevent infection and balloon expulsion, respectively. The patient should be prescribed high- dose estradiol (5 mg qd for 2. A postoperative HSG should be performed 2 months later. In many instances, more than one hysteroscopy is required for total resection. Endometrial polyps. Endometrial polyps are removed through operative hysteroscopy associated with a dilatation and curettage, if necessary. An HSG follow- up procedure is not necessary. To prevent further polyp development associated with anovulation, the patient should have withdrawal bleeding at least every 6 weeks. Myoma treatment. In general, small and asymptomatic myomas do not require treatment, but the patient should be periodically monitored. Fibroids should be treated if they are associated with abnormal uterine bleeding or if they are thought to be the cause of infertility. Three modalities are used to treat myomas: medical treatment, surgical treatment, and embolization. Medical treatment is a temporary treatment, ideally used for patients who are close to menopause or who are risky surgical candidates. However, medical treatment can be used to reduce the myoma size prior to removal. Gn. RH analog (. The 3 classes of surgical techniques are conventional laparotomy, operative laparoscopy, and operative hysteroscopy, as follows: Laparotomy: This technique is indicated for large myomas, for submucous myomas larger than 3 cm in diameter, or for myomas that, regardless of being submucous, have a portion of the myoma that compromises the myometrium so that a complete resection through the hysteroscopy is not feasible. This technique should be reserved for myomas with a diameter less than 6 cm. To avoid this complication, the circulating nurse must record the amount of distention fluid injected and the amount recovered in the suction device. If a deficit of greater than 1 L is recorded, the procedure should be terminated, and, preferably, the myomectomy should be completed in a second hysteroscopic attempt. The patient's electrolyte levels must be checked to consider the need for diuretics. Uterine synechiae development is a potential complication after the surgery; therefore, a postoperative HSG should be part of follow- up care. The procedure is performed by interventional radiology and requires overnight admission for the patient. Before surgery, the HSG films and results of previous laparoscopies should be thoroughly reviewed to decide on the type of surgical technique that is required and to explain to the patient the expected degree of success and risks involved with the procedure. Tubal obstruction and lysis of adhesions can be corrected through laparotomy, operative laparoscopy, and, in special circumstances, through operative hysteroscopy and tubal cannulation. Laparotomy is indicated in patients with severe pelvic adhesions that compromise the bowel, ovaries, and tubes, with obliteration of the cul- de- sac. Blunt dissection should be avoided. Constant irrigation with Ringer lactate solution and heparin prevents fibrin formation. Meticulous hemostasis is imperative. Fimbrioplasty for fimbria agglutination or phimosis without destruction of the cilial epithelium is equally successful. The incidence rate of ectopic pregnancy after surgery is in the range of 5%. Treatment of hydrosalpinx (distal tubal obstruction) with salpingostomy can be performed through microsurgery or operative laparoscopy. No difference in the pregnancy rate occurs if a skillful microsurgeon or laparoscopist performs the salpingostomy. The success of the procedure is related to the diameter of the hydrosalpinx and to the damage to the cilial epithelium. If the cilial epithelium has been destroyed, the outcome of the procedure is poor, and it is better to perform a salpingectomy in preparation for future IVF. The pregnancy rate fluctuates from 2. Before treating cornual obstruction, the diagnosis should be confirmed. In many cases, cornual obstruction diagnosed on HSG represents simple cornual spasm. Leaked Documents Reveal the Hotel Lobby's Aggressive Plan to Undermine Airbnb. Airbnb can be an awesome service for frugal travelers, and it feels especially great to use when the only other option is staying at an overpriced boutique hotel in the same city. But the incumbent hotel lobby is hoping to highlight some of the weaknesses of the “short- term rental” service, including how it negatively impacts communities and allows unregulated businesses to thrive. A document recently obtained by The New York Times reveals the hotel lobby’s plan to thwart Airbnb’s business by pushing for bills to regulate the company at every level of government. Although we’ve known for years that hotel lobbyists have been fighting to impose regulations on Airbnb, the new document shows just how well- organized the upstart’s opponents are. OBAMA’S MARXIST CONNECTIONSOBAMA’S CHILDHOOD MENTOR WAS THE MARXIST,Frank Marshall Davis, a black communist writer. One particular piece of Marxist literature, Rules for Radicals, penned by the Chicago Marxist Jew, Saul Alinsky, had oft been quoted by Obama in campaign speeches during his run for a State Senate seat in Illinois in 1. Obama’s embrace of the ideology of Saul Alinsky began when he was 2. Dreams From My Father, was searching for a genuine African- American community. White leftists of the Developing Communities Project of Chicago were looking for someone who could recruit in a black neighborhood in the south side of Chicago. Obama answered their Help- Wanted ad and soon took up a paid position as a community organizer. The Developing Communities Project was built on the Alinsky model of community agitation, wherein paid organizers learned how to “rub raw the sores of discontent.” “The agitator’s job,” according to Alinsky, “is first to bring folks to the realization that they are indeed miserable, that their misery is the fault of unresponsive governments and greedy corporations, then help them to bond together to demand what they think they deserve.” As a confirmed atheist, Alinsky saw an opportunity to cynically spread his socialist ideology in already- formed church communities as being the perfect springboards for agitation and creating bonds for their demands. But to fulfill the Alinsky manifesto, Obama joined a huge black nationalist church, whose pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, (whom Obama called his spiritual mentor), preached a “black” gospel. Later, the Chicago DSA newsletter reported that Obama, as a State Senator, showed up to eulogize the Jew, Saul Mendelson, one of the “champions” of “Chicago’s democratic left.” The Democratic Socialists of America is the principal US affiliate of the Socialist International, which enjoys a “consultative status” with the United Nations. This international connection is significant because two of Obama’s recent legislations, The Global Poverty Act, and The Climate Change Bill, are both pieces of the UN’s socialist agenda to siphon the wealth of Western nations to Third World Muslim countries and ultimately, to implement its plan for a socialist World Government. It needs to be stated right off the bat that this is a very large topic and couldn’t possibly be covered via one article. The goal of this article is the following: Give you a base understanding of what hypothyroidism is. ![]() Give you an understanding of what hypothyroidism isn’t. Give you a base understanding of the current best options for testing. Provide my opinion of the best course of action for fat loss if you have a thyroid problem. What does your thyroid do? Your thyroid is located in your neck and produces hormones that are important to various processes in the body. This ranges from oxygen use, heat production, and use of nutrients and vitamins. That is just touching on a big player to many important processes. What is Hypothyroidism? When T4 (thyroxine) drops too low it causes different processes in the body to slow down and become less efficient. The symptoms of this range based on the severity of the illness. The more severe the decrease in T4 the worse the symptoms. ![]()
![]() Xt Labs Guaranteed Quality. Decaplex-300 for intramuscular injection contains nandroine decanoate. The symptoms for hypothroidism are vague and can apply to many situations. For example, depression and fatigue can be symptoms of many different diseases. I have caught heat in the past for saying that tests show if you have a thyroid problem, and they do. That doesn’t mean I don’t believe that doctors can’t mess it up. If you use this guide the next time you go to the doctor then you should at least get the test information you need. Before you get your tests done talk with your doctor about the information you have and don’t be afraid to go somewhere else if you need to. Ask your doctor to check these levels to cover as much ground as possible. TSHFree triiodothyronine (f. T3)Free levothyroxine (f. T4)Reverse T3. Total T3. Total T4. Antithyroid antibodies. There are other tests such as imaging and urine tests, but in my opinion these tests should at least give a signaling to something being off in your system for further investigation as needed. How to read the results. The problem with the results is that different labs have different ranges. It also isn’t the levels, but how the levels correspond with one another. Currently your best bet for feeling optimal is to have your TSH landing at the lower end of the normal range and your T3 & T4 at the upper end of the normal range. You can have normal TSH levels but low T4 levels and this could mean you are entering into a subclinical phase. Subclinical does not mean full blown. I have seen clients go from subclinical to normal levels from simply taking proper diet breaks. In fact that is one purpose of The Metabolic Repair Manual. Starve Mode. This is not about self diagnosis though, you want a doctor involved. This is merely about looking out for yourself and lowering any frustrations. If you come back with levels you feel or your doctor feels is not optimal, then you need to be ready for the next stage of action. What to do if you are diagnosed with a thyroid problem? The first thing you need to do is be very clear in your communication with your doctor. If this isn’t your doctors field of knowledge you will be much better off getting a referral to an Endocrinologist. Medication may or may not be needed depending on your levels. Below is a brief explanation of what you can do for different stage of diagnosis. Hypothyroidism – If you are diagnosed with full blown hypothyroidism with very extreme and obvious levels then chances are you are going to be on medication for life so that you can function well. Don’t let this scare you though. If you are communicating with a doctor who is knowledgeable this does not have to be a bad event. When treatment for hypothyroidism is done correctly you merely feel better. The problem is when the patient and the doctor aren’t communicating right and dosage levels are wrong. Make sure to explain to your doctor how your medication is making you feel and discuss with them the specific issue and signs for too high or too low of a dosage for your medication. Nonthyroid Illness/Subclinical/Euthyroid Sick Syndrome. All basically mean that you are messed up, but not necessarily broken. Most people who are dealing with less than optimal thyroid function are in this category. Ever since Oprah proclaimed her thyroid woes we have books piling the shelves (and internet ebooks) about how it “isn’t your fault.” Men and women everywhere are running out and getting themselves diagnosed with full blown hypothyrodism, when it may not be the case at all. There are a lot of things that can contribute to TSH levels being normal, but other levels being low. One in particular is constant dieting down and overtraining, but this doesn’t mean you have hypothyrodism. As I stated earlier when I wrote the Metabolic Repair Manual the program had two main goals.- Help people reload on calories with as little side effects as possible.- Help normalize low aggression hormone problems like thyroid and menstrual problems. To give you a cliffs note on the book the goal is to train smart and treat your body well. I merely constructed a step- by- step method of doing that and discuss how constant dieting down can harm your metabolic burn, but that doesn’t mean you are broken yet. That doesn’t mean medication should or should not be used, but I would look into other options first and make sure it is what is needed.“But isn’t my thyroid making me fat!?”Hypothyroidism is blamed often for weight gain in both adults and children. With exception of some water retention in more severe cases weight gain isn’t usually an issue. Energy balance still works in those with thyroid dysfunction, it just may be lowered. If you are treating yourself with proper medication, or if you take the time to take proper breaks and refeeds from dieting, it really shouldn’t be an issue. Only extremely rare diseases or life threatening illnesses can cause massive osmosis and retention, and this is followed by hospital stays or death. The most you can expect with slow thyroid function is either a higher tendency to water retention on low levels or slower metabolic function causing your rate of burn to be slightly lower than normal. Dieting and training for hypothroidism. It is exactly the same as it would be for anyone else except you have to be smarter, listen a little harder to your body, and the chance of having to take things a little slower. In short, you don’t really get lucky and can’t get by on crap habits. With any dieting down situation you want to abide by a balance of enough deficit to achieve results, but smart enough training and diet breaks to keep things going along smoothly. If you are dealing with thyroid issues that there are a few things to keep on the front of you mind. Watch training volume and keep it lower. Less is more. I would not recommend lots of HIIT mixed with even a moderate deficit (2. Schedule re- feeds a little more frequently. The harder you diet down, the more you need to break. Don’t be overly carb restrictive for extended periods of time. If sensitive to dieting down I recommend keeping to a very minimum protein intake (. Ideally a carb cycling program is best, however due to water retention issues you are going to be more likely to retain water on your “ups” so keep this in mind. You can diet down just as low as anyone else though. If on medication it should be much easier, but make sure to keep up with your doctor if dieting down for an extended period of time. Overall you would follow the same core beliefs that are in Fat Loss Troubleshoot. If you are someone that has been having long term overtraining and dieting down issues and think that your low levels or issues may be because of that then I highly recommend getting Starve Mode. Freshness Counts: Histamine Intolerance - Diagnosis: Diet. Could a Low- Histamine Diet Be the Solution to Your Health Problems? Do you suffer from any of the following? Headaches/Migraines. Asthma. Itching. Puffy eyes. Facial flushing. Hives. Pre- menstrual cramps. Cough. Palpitations or racing heart. Swelling of ankles/feet. Low blood pressure. High blood pressure. Insomnia. Abdominal pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea. If so, you’re not alone. MANY people have at least one of the problems listed above but might never suspect that the culprit could be right in front of their noses—on their dinner plates! These symptoms can all be caused by a tiny but powerful natural substance called histamine. Anybody can have Histamine Intolerance, but you are at higher risk if you eat a GAPS diet, low- carb diet, enjoy gourmet foods, or have been swept up in the current fermented foods fad, because histamine is found lurking primarily in aged, fermented, cured, cultured, and smoked foods. Foods like aged beef, ripe cheeses, salami, sauerkraut, red wine, and natto can all be quite high in histamine. Histamine Intolerance symptoms tend to appear very soon after eating a high- histamine food, typically within less than two hours. Symptoms typically disappear in a matter of hours and rarely last longer than 2. These symptoms aren’t proof positive of a histamine problem; it is also possible that you have other food sensitivities or health problems, which we’ll discuss later in this article. This post is dedicated to the practical aspects of Histamine Intolerance, such as diagnosis, prevention, treatment, food choices, food handling/storage, and medications to avoid. To learn about the biology and chemistry behind this diagnosis—what histamine is, how it forms, how it behaves in our bodies and why some people are more sensitive to it than others, please see my companion post: Histamine Intolerance: Understanding the Science. If you already know you have Histamine Intolerance and just want to know what to do about it, you can skip ahead by choosing a heading from the menu below: Ready? Onward! If you have healthy gut defenses, you can handle reasonable quantities of histamine in foods. However, more and more of us have compromised gastrointestinal systems and so have difficulty with even small quantities of natural food toxins like histamine. If too much histamine makes its way from foods into your bloodstream, it can cause a wide variety of unpleasant symptoms. If you eat too much histamine or are sensitive to histamine, you can experience all kinds of annoying symptoms that most people wouldn’t think of as related to diet, including asthma, panic attacks, pre- menstrual cramps, and sleep disturbances. My Story. Histamine Intolerance is much more common than most people realize. Most people who have it don’t realize it—I was one of them! In 2. 01. 3 I started a blog series about a new ketogenic diet I was experimenting with, describing how I felt along the way. It was then that Dr. Judy Tsafrirwrote in and suggested I might have Histamine Intolerance. And by gum, she was right! ![]() ![]() ![]() This eureka moment was what inspired me to write these articles for you. Who is at Risk for Histamine Intolerance? Histamine Intolerance affects at LEAST 1% of us, but the majority of people with Histamine Intolerance go undiagnosed, so the actual prevalence is surely much higher. Histamine Intolerance sufferers are middle- aged, and the vast majority are female. Other risk factors for Histamine Intolerance include: Gastrointestinal damage (Crohn’s, Celiac, intestinal surgery, chemotherapy)Deficiencies in vitamin B6, vitamin C, zinc, or copper. Genetic abnormalities in DAO (diamine oxidase), the primary enzyme responsible for protecting us from histamine in foods. Taking a medication that interferes with histamine metabolism. How Much Histamine Can You Tolerate? Levels exceeding 2 mg/L in beverages and 5. Histamine Intolerance, because the human body has a limited capacity to handle histamine in foods. People with Histamine Intolerance tend to react to even lower levels because they are especially sensitive. Foods High in Histamine. Nearly all foods contain at least a small amount of histamine, so it’s impossible to completely avoid it. However, some foods are MUCH higher in histamine than others. Unfortunately, histamine levels in foods vary WIDELY. For example, like other animal foods, fresh tuna is very low in histamine, whereas levels in canned tuna can range anywhere from zero to as high as 4. So as you’ll notice, most histamine levels in the tables below are listed as ranges rather than absolute values. Unless you have your own personal chemistry lab, it is simply impossible to know how much histamine is in any given food. However, there are general guidelines that can help you guess whether a food is likely to be lower or higher in histamine. Any high- protein food (meat, poultry, seafood) that isn’t absolutely fresh will contain rising levels of histamine. The less fresh it is, the more histamine it will contain. Examples include aged beef, leftover chicken salad stored for too long in the refrigerator, and fish that takes a long time to travel from the boat to the grocery store. Most aged, cultured, fermented, smoked, and cured foods and even some cultured beverages. A handful of fresh plant foods that are naturally high in histamine. Beverages. Champagne. LRed Wineup to 2. LCoffee. Plant Foods. Most (fresh) vegetables are very low in histamine, with levels ranging from 0 to 1. Dry sausages such as salami, pepperoni, and chorizo, are the meat products highest in histamine content. Dry aged sausagesup to 3. Fish. Certain kinds of fish are more likely to contain high amounts of histamine unless they are very fresh, because they are naturally higher in the amino acid histidine, which bacteria can turn into histamine. Amberjack. Herring. Tuna. Anchovies. Mackerel. Pilchards. Bluefish. Mahi Mahi. Sardines. Cape Yellowtail. Marlin. Trigger Foods. Some foods are suspected of triggering histamine release within some people’s bodies, even though they may not contain much histamine of their own. Citrus fruits. Crustaceans. Spices. Peanuts. Fish. Licorice. Pineapple. Tomatoes. Additives. Strawberries. Egg White. Spinach. Papaya. Pork. Nuts. Chocolate. How is Histamine Intolerance Diagnosed? If you have at least two typical symptoms (listed at the top of this article) and they go away either with a low- histamine diet or with the use of antihistamine medications, then you probably have Histamine Intolerance. As with any food sensitivity issue, keeping a careful food- symptom diary is very important in noticing patterns. There are many possible food culprits in the world that have nothing to do with Histamine Intolerance, so you may discover some surprising food reactions if you pay close attention. Keeping an accurate food diary— food and drink consumed, symptoms, sleep, exercise, and medications—can reveal patterns and identify problem foods in your diet. This is a powerful tool in reclaiming your good health. People who suspect they may have Histamine Intolerance should first be tested for true food allergies to rule those out before undergoing more specialized testing. Food allergies can cause a lot of the same symptoms that Histamine Intolerance can. Other possible conditions that can mimic Histamine Intolerance Include: Non- histamine food intolerances. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, a condition in which histamine- producing mast cells in the immune system are too reactive Mastocytosis, a rare genetic excess of mast cells. There is a variety of methods you and your doctor can use to figure out whether you might have Histamine Intolerance, but most available tests are imperfect. This means that even if you “test negative” for Histamine Intolerance, you could still have it. That’s why I believe the best approach is to eat a low- histamine diet for a few weeks to see if your symptoms go away. If they do, you’ve solved your own problem and you may decide you don’t need further proof or validation! Serum DAO Level. Activity levels of DAO—the enzyme that destroys histamine–can be measured using a blood test: “Histamine Intolerance is presumably highly likely in patients with DAO activity < 3 U/m. L, likely (but less likely) in patients with DAO activity < 1. U/m. L, and improbable in patients with DAO activity > 1. U/m. L.” . Even if your DAO blood test comes back normal, there is still a 5. Histamine Intolerance (false- negative). If your DAO blood test comes back abnormal, there is a 1. DON’T have Histamine Intolerance (false- positive). Oral Histamine Challenge. Many physicians consider this test to be the gold standard for diagnosis of Histamine Intolerance. It involves following a strict low- histamine diet for four weeks, and then undergoing a “histamine challenge” in which you are asked to swallow capsules filled with pure histamine (typically a 7. Histamine Intolerance. Unfortunately, this test can also be misleading, because there are many people with Histamine Intolerance who do not react to pure histamine and pass this test with flying colors. They look and feel perfectly fine. Why would that be? If you are sensitive to histamine, and someone gives you pure histamine, shouldn’t you have a bad reaction? Preliminary findings from researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center were presented at the 2. American Association for Cancer Research in Washington, D. C. Ginger was shown to cause ovarian cancer cells to die under laboratory conditions. Ginger also caused ovarian cancer cell death in a way that may prevent tumor cells from becoming resistant to treatment, a common problem with chemotherapy. Ginger caused two kinds of cancer cell death. The first, apoptosis causes cells to essentially commit suicide. The second type of cell death, autophagy, causes cells to digest or attack themselves. If ginger can cause autophagic cell death in addition to apoptosis, it may circumvent resistance to conventional chemotherapy. Rebecca Liu, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, explained in a prepared statement. The researchers' next step is to determine if ginger can achieve similar results in animals. Ginger also has virtually no side- effects and is easy to administer as a capsule. Henry Scowcroft, science information officer for Cancer Research UK, said previous research showed that ginger extract could stop cancer cell growth so it was possible that ginger could form the basis of a new drug. But more work is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn, he added. We still don't know whether ginger, in any form, can prevent or treat cancers in animals or people. In addition, researchers at the U- M Comprehensive Cancer Center are investigating ginger to control nausea from chemotherapy and ginger to prevent colon cancer. We don't know how these products interact with chemotherapy or other cancer treatments. There's no good clinical data. Rebecca Liu, M. D., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the U- M Medical School and a member of the U- M Comprehensive Cancer Center. Melatonin. There is a curious connection between ovarian cancer and the sun. Breast cancer is also affected by light, and perhaps prostrate cancer is as well. The discussion below is about ovarian and breast cancers, but it may apply to other hormone- related tumors. Most women diagnosed with ovarian cancer come from the northern climates where they get too little sun. This correlates with findings that these women are getting too little Vitamin D, and too much estrogen. Melatonin is a hormone involved with the day/night cycle; with body rhythms- it reduces estrogen levels in darkness; at night, during sleep mostly. Women who consistently slept 9 or more hours per night had less than one- third the risk of developing breast tumors, than women who slept 7 to 8 hours per night (Finnish study). Some European doctors are prescribing Melatonin in doses of 1. Melatonin can prevent many kinds of solid tumors, especially breast cancer. Blind women are, by definition, unreceptive to light (the skin does absorb light, so blind individuals do get weak . Hahn, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Ga., combined statistics from a national survey on women hospitalized between 1. He found that blind women were only half as prone to develop breast cancer as sighted women (Epidemiology, May 1. Indirectly, this may reduce the risk of malignancy. For the past 2. 0 years, scientists have explored the hypothesis that exposure to artificial light at night disrupts the natural melatonin- estrogen balance, resulting in less melatonin than there should be, and more estrogen. The net effect is a heightened risk of estrogen- sensitive tumors, such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Analysis showed that totally blind women enjoyed a 3. British Journal of Cancer (2. Yet, women who were merely impaired visually, but not totally blind, showed no evidence of similarly protective effects, according to Dr. The association between melatonin levels and cancer has suggested to some that melatonin may be a modifier of cancer progression. In one study, researchers examined all clinical trials assessing the role of melatonin as a therapy for solid tumor cancers. The authors reviewed 1. The study showed that melatonin was predominantly safe and had a beneficial effect on sleep patterns of patients. All the clinical trials involved in the study were from Europe from a related network of clinical researchers in Italy and Poland. The Canadian researchers urge caution in interpreting immediate clinical usefulness of large doses of melatonin and recommend patients discuss this with their physicians before beginning any treatments. Dugald Seely, a cancer researcher at Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto says . The small number of people needed to treat, low adverse events reported, and low costs related to this intervention should be of substantial interest to patients, physicians and policy makers. Completion of independently conducted studies is required to confirm the efficacy and safety of melatonin in cancer treatment. A 2. 00. 5 study established the relationship, showing clearly that light at night is a risk factor for breast cancer. Tumors are awake (more active) during the day when melatonin is suppressed. At night, in the dark, melatonin puts (hormone related) tumor cells to sleep. Altering light intensity and exposure and/or taking melatonin supplements is now an important consideration in the risk and treatment of hormone related cancers. Obesity, advancing age, and smoking all correlate with reduced melatonin production. The use of alcohol late at night also reduces melatonin in the blood. Melatonin works by inhibiting cancer cells from taking up linoleic acid (a polyunsaturated fat). Fatty foods, eaten late at night spike the levels of linoleic acid and increase the need for melatonin. Insufficient melatonin in the blood stream causes the ovaries to produce excessive estrogen and other sex hormones which are linked to ovarian and breast cancer. There is a striking statement in the advertisement stating that women with ovarian cancer should not take Melatonin supplements. I do not know why this is. But it does strongly suggest caution before self- medicating with melatonin. The ad came out before the above study, however, so I do not know where the debate stands at the moment. Melatonin crosses the blood- brain barrier very effectively. It appears to protect the central nervous system against injury, disease, and aging better than any other substance. Melatonin is used to induce drowsiness and improve sleep patterns. More and more doctors are recommending Melatonin as a safe and effective insomnia therapy instead of dangerous FDA- approved drugs such as Halcion, Xanax, and Valium. It has been shown, in thousands of published studies, to protect against almost every disease associated with aging including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, age- associated immune impairment, and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, as well as against aging itself. Melatonin has been shown to be completely safe in humans in doses of up to 1,0. The most common side effect of taking too much Melatonin is feeling drowsy when you wake up, which can be prevented by taking less Melatonin the next night. The Life Extension Foundation uses only pharmaceutical- quality Melatonin that has been Assayed for purity, with results of up to 1. If you are pregnant, or seeking to become pregnant, do not take Melatonin. Melatonin boosts the production of immune system cells throughout the body. This is extremely important for people over age 4. If you have an immune system cancer such as leukemia or lymphoma, however, you may not want to take Melatonin until more is known about Melatonin's effects on these types of cancer. It is not yet clear whether Melatonin is beneficial or harmful for women with ovarian cancer. If taking Melatonin makes you feel more depressed, stop taking it. This enables most people to enjoy a deep, restful, therapeutic night of sleep. This provides more direct absorption of Melatonin into the brain and bypasses the liver where much of orally ingested Melatonin can be metabolized (in some people) before it reaches the brain. If you can get to sleep, but find that you wake up during the night, time- release Melatonin can help you to stay asleep all night long. If you have a problem in getting to sleep and staying asleep, take sublingual Melatonin before bedtime to induce drowsiness and then take a time- release Melatonin. Indole- 3- carbinol (I3. C) can completely destroy several different lines of ovarian cancer cells, according to a report to the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists. Green tea supplements can be taken which have a reduced caffeine content. The study investigated whether tea consumption can enhance the survival of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, a prospective cohort study was conducted in Hangzhou, China. Two hundred forty four (9. The actual number of deaths was obtained and Cox proportional hazards models were used to obtain hazard ratios and associated 9. CI), adjusting for age at diagnosis, locality, BMI, parity, FIGO stage, histologic grade of differentiation, cytology of ascites, residual tumor and chemotherapeutic status. There were 8. 1 (7. Conclusion: that increasing the consumption of green tea post- diagnosis may enhance epithelial ovarian cancer survival. The study involved 6. Swedish women who answered a questionnaire about their diets and then were tracked for an average of 1. Those who reported drinking two or more cups of tea a day were 4. Drinking less than two cups also appeared to help, but not as much. Each additional cup of tea a day could lower the risk by another 1. Both black and green tea contain polyphenols . Previous studies on whether tea might help prevent various kinds of cancer have yielded conflicting results. Researchers Susanna Larsson and Alicja Wolk of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm said more research is needed to sort out the inconsistencies. |
